It’s Wednesday and that means one thing, time for another top five Wednesday!
Top Five Wednesday was created back in November of 2013 by Lainey from gingerreadslainey on Youtube. It’s a weekly meme that revolves around various (usually bookish) topics.
This weeks topic is my five favourite minor characters. These are characters that aren’t the protagonist or the antagonist of the novel, film, or tv show. They typically aren’t the sidekick or a principle, instead are those that we see alongside the protagonist but doesn’t typically have a lot to do with the plot throughout. For example, Hermione and Ron are principle characters whilst Neville, Luna and Dean are side characters in my opinion.
So, shall we begin?
Iko from The Lunar Chronicles, by Marissa Meyer
For those who haven’t read the Lunar Chronicles yet, you won’t have met the beauty that is Iko. She is a beautiful android with a faulty personality chip which has made her the most amazing character in the whole series. She starts out as this little android and then somehow becomes a ship before becoming … well that would be spoilers wouldn’t it. But there’s something about her that just makes me chuckle. She’s like the fairy godmother in a way though of course Cinder doesn’t really need a fairy godmorther since she’s a badass. More like a fairy best friend who makes supportive comments and has some very witty one liners.
Born from The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien
One of my favourite sections from this book is when we reach the wilderland and Beorn’s house. The fact that this man can shapeshift into a bear yet he isn’t violent. Well there is evidence of his beast like nature in the description from the warg skin at his gate to the goblin head on a spike. But he doesn’t kill needlessly. He lives off of the land, eating only things from the earth and treating the animals in his care with grace. He dislikes Dwarves yet he still gives them hospitality. He really is the ultimate definition of a gentle giant and I kind of wish we had spent longer with him so that we could get to know his wonderful nature.
Lysandra from The Throne of Glass series, by Sarah J. Maas
I won’t go into her character a lot since she isn’t introduced until the series is in full swing but there is just something about this woman. I despised her initially but now. The loyalty that that woman shows is breathtaking. I cannot express my love for her enough, especially with what she’s doing now.
AIDAN from The Illuminae Files, by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff
This might be a little cheat because he is kind of a major character but he’s the first being that comes to mind when I think of none main characters. I clearly just have a thing for super computer / android characters. He may be insane and a little bit evil but there’s just something about him that makes me chuckle and love every little thing about him.
Levi Ackerman from Attack on Titan, by Hajime Isayama
In both the anime and the Manga I completely adore Levi. Not only is he a badass fighter who can take down titans without any assistance but he is also a complete germaphobe. That combination just makes me chuckle. It shouldn’t work but it really does.
So there we have it. There are five of my favourite side characters from different books (and mangas) that I adore. Have I mentioned any of your favourites? Feel free to let me know.
