Top Five Wednesday ||| Non-Horror Books That Scared You

It’s Wednesday and that means one thing; time for another Top Five Wednesday.

Top Five Wednesday was created back in November 2014 by Lainey from gingerreadslianey over on youtube. It’s a weekly meme that revolves around various (usually bookish) topics.

This weeks topic for the forth and final spooky themed month is favourite non-horror books that scared you. This can be because of the tension, because of what happened to a character or they just made you jump for no particular reason. That makes sense, right. As a little side note this week, i’m not going to give a blurb for any of the books that I mention because most them are books that I feel you should go into blind.

So, shall we begin.

And Then There Were None, by Agatha Christie

This woman is a queen of suspense and this, out of the few Christie’s that I’ve read, is by far my favourite. The very premise had me clinging to the edge of my seat from beginning to end. And the delivery. It still sends shivers down my spine.

One of Us Is Lying, by Karen McManus

A murder mystery set in a high school. What isn’t there to love. I read this in one sitting simply because I couldn’t put it down. I’m still shook from the ending and it gives me chills just thinking about it.

You, by Caroline Kepnes

This thriller could be going on to anyone at any time because the type of love that is shown is often viewed as a positive in most YA literature. It shows a controlling element that in many cases is seemed endearing yet it turned on its head and shown just how dangerous love can be. If you can even call this love.

Mother, Mother, by Koren Zailckas

Once again, this thriller is terrifying as it shows love in a controlling manner but not romantic love this time. No, instead it shows motherly love. The way that this book played out had me gripped to the edge of my feet in fear as I can see how, in a twisted way, this woman views herself as a protective, loving mother and is ultimately blinded by this love. Honestly, it was utterly terrorfying.

The Hate U Give, by Angie Thomas

This book is on this list because it terrifies me. It terrifies me because this is actually happening in the world. This is based on real life events and I simply cannot understand how that is the fas in this day and age. How can people still view one race or religion less than another. How can this still be happening in a Western Society as powerful as America? I don’t understand it and that is what terrifies me about this book.
